Kaitlyn Niland | Niland Candle Co.

Kaitlyn Niland

How long have you been an artisan? How did your particular skillset develop over time?

I started making candles as gifts about 10 years ago when I was in undergrad. I have always loved candles, but I’m allergic to nearly everything so most candles made me sneezy. It evolved into a business around five years ago when I was working for a local hotel supply company, In-Room Plus. We had a customer looking for in-room travel candles and I said, “I think I can do this,” and that was it. The business formed naturally from there — I’m so thankful for the growth and opportunity to create something with my hands. Pouring candles is truly my escape from day-to-day BS.

Please describe your work / product.

My candles are made with 100% USA soy wax, free of any fillers, scented with essential oil based fragrance oils, and hemp-cored wicks. My candle is an addition to your personal space — it should lend to it, not over-pour it.

Who are some of your favorite artisans / makers in the region? Who amongst your peers inspires your work?

There are so many makers, artisans and business owners who inspire — it’s hard to nail them all down. But, Christa Prenner of CDesigns and one of ShopCraft’s founders, she is always thinking beyond the box and has an amazing work ethic. Katie Toth from TreBird, she has always pushed me to do more even when I say NO WAY!

How long have you been a business owner in WNY?

Five years.

How long have you been a part of Buffalo Women’s Gifts?

This is my second year, my first year was in 2016! I’m so excited to be back.

Where can people see / purchase your work year-round?
